NEW - IN PROGRESS & PLANNED STUFF:

July:

CLAPTON 2010.  Some of the oldest DVDs were done with older equipment and not designed for the range of levels and accuracy contained in the current DVDs.  Clapton was one of the very first DVDs and was in bad need of being reworked.  I love these songs and felt they needed to be completely redone with newer equipment and the attention to detail that they deserve.  I believe its now more accurate, complete with better quality video.  It also contains updated audio compression with better resolution and I am very happy with this DVD.   Unfortunately I'm not able to give a free copy to everyone who may have bought the previous version in the last 5 years, but anyone who recently purchased it at retail price can contact me directly about possibly some kind of pro-rated discount on the new version.

Stevie Ray Vaughan vol.1 2010. Also: Full Remake of originial SRV v1 DVD. Available Soon.

Recent Requests: Gary Moore, Joe Bonamassa, Billy Idol, Frank Marino, ZZ Top, Greenday, Pink Floyd2, Kiss, Huey Lewis, Manfred Mann, Nazareth, James Taylor, CSNY,  Janis Joplin & Holding Co, Joan Jett, Pretenders, Heart, HeadPins (Canada), The Cars, Cheap Trick, Trower, SRV, Foo Fighters, Styx, Kansas... Plus Shredders like Alvin Lee, Rory Gallager, Steve Morse, Montrose, Eric Johnson (which maybe outside the parameters & abilities of this series;).

Thanks to all!  Rock on! :)

General Stuff:

In between DVD continue working on long-term projects such as revising, reediting & redoing some of the very early DVDs in the catalogue. I've always intentionally tried to keep these very informal with the appearance of a live 1-on-1 lesson, but some of early stuff could use a little trim to help streamline certain lessons.  I started off trying to gear these a little bit more for newer players but then based on requests I began adding more on leads to try to target them at a wider range of intermediate levels.  But still will be attempting to keep up with the normal 10-12 new DVD's per year.  Thank you all very much!

HOW TO DECIDE ON NEW DVDS:

So much good stuff still to do, its always hard to decide on the next one.  First and foremost I have to try to use my own judgement. I try hard to look at songs that have guitar parts that I think are great and represent a certain style.  I do try to choose some different things - often times doing songs I didn't really care for but its important to stretch out your playing beyond your comfort zone. Of course my own familiarity with material and current access to the originals does have an effect on my selections as well as how quickly it can be done. I love input and do evaluate type and number of requests, the popularity of the material, and use a specific set of standards to determine if something fits in the series.

Please do not take it personally if your request isn't done next - I love all requests but not all can be done. There are some things that may not work well for this series - like things that are so lead or speed intensive that it would require a full DVD for 1-2 songs or may only be useful for very advanced players.  While there are some things I personally love, there may be some that I am not familiar enough with or do not think I could do proper justice.  All these things go into consideration and do make choosing very hard - but eventually I would like to do a little bit on almost everything!  So keep sending me suggestions, feedback and stay tuned!

Thanks!

ALLMAN BROS:  I've had a lot of requests for them understandably but they asked me not to teach their stuff.  (Actually it was just family members that own some songs but I partially do this just to help keep the music alive with new generations of musicians so if anyone has any problem with the material being taught I gladly agree.)

Custom Amp Projects - Tweaking 'da Tube Tones
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2009:

(Misc. periods of building. Will try to remember some of builds/rebuilds/tweaks worked on this year.)

Crate 60 Vintage Club combo:  Sounded like shit!  The VC20 and VC30 series were very nice so bought this off ebay in 2007 for CHEAP - so should've known.  Sounded like a solid state POS no matter what I did! But supposed to have nice Transformers running 4-12ax7 and 2-EL34 tubes. So Ripped the entire guts out and put in my own hand wired turret board based on a Marshall 2204 using 3 12ax7's with some common Marshall gain mods.  Turned out pretty nice and LOUD with lots of gain. Of course that lasted a few months before I ripped back into it.  Added in the 4th preamp tube based on Soldano and Marshall Moddified preamps.  Put in 2 switches to change gain of preamp tubes on the fly - can switch from cleaner than 2204 to stock Marshall, Slash's famous #39 Marshall, to Soldano Preamp.  Can also plug into the low input for super clean to semi-clean tone with 1 less gain stage.

Purple 18watt Stout: Got this 18watt chassis only from a guy who built as a std 18watter.  Sounds good but I always felt like I'd like just a BIT more aggressive gain so decided to cascade the 1st 2 gain stages.  Used Hoffman Stout circuit with switch to go from std 18watt stock to cascaded gain stages.  Actually sounds very nice in stock mode and overdrives nicely in upper ranges - in STOUT mode its a monster with huge gain (possibly too much at highest vol settings). Hmmm, maybe will tweak a bit... :)

Finally rebuilt the 18watt Pine Combo into a custom EF86 clean style amp that I like.  Key was a unique 'squish' control which actually just controls the massive gain of the EF86 which can cause nasty excessive distortion in the Phase Inverter.  Its now a pretty clean amp until higher range on volume.  Similar circuit to an old VOX EF86 with 6-position rotary style tone control which uses various cap sizes to add/cut bottom end to taylor for various guitars.

Reworked the Bassman Clone in early 2009 again.  Ended up with a soldano type circuit with some custom tweaks due to lower voltage.  Sounds kinda cool but after a few months I'm thinking of ripping into it again.  Higain circuits need an FX loop to use delays, but FX loops suck and suck tone - maybe go back to a more Plexi or Trainwreak circuit again.

YouTube Test Clips: Bassman Clone Soldano Style / EF86 Combo

Fall 08:  Totally rebuilt the Blackface Bassman Clone - wanted to do a Trainwreck channel and a Marshall channel but their tone stacks are at completely different locations and would require a relay - boo.  So I went to a all-marshall style cathode-follower tone stack just before the phase inverter.  I went with a simple Plexi style circuit for the clean/light crunch and then added gain stages via DPDT switches.  1st stage is sweet plexi, 2nd 'channel' goes into a hot-rodded JCM800 territory and then with final flip of switch goes super higain very similar to a Bogner Ecstacy (which itself is just a hotrodded marshall type design).   The last revision I'm super please with and think it really covers all the Plexi to Ecstacy ground very well with a great vintage vibe due to the great big huge transformers courtesy of the old 1950's audio amp this was built on.

Summer 08: More tweaking and revisions of existing builds.  Rebuilt the hammond based 2xEL84 amp several times, latest is customized preamp similar to a Trainwreck, w/switch to add extra gain stages.  Redesigned my EF86 based custom combo to clean up a bit.  Love to keep tweaking to see how various changes to every stage can affect gain, overdrive, eq structure, and over all tone. ('09-redesigned EF86 combo to be a Vox-style but with custom tweak to make it cleaner.  Gorgeous clean sounds - samples.)

Early '08:Just completing a new amp based on a custom built Blackface Bassman head.  Normal channel is straight blackface clean, morphs into crunch above 6/7.  Instead of the Bass channel I've built a Trainwreck channel - required a LOT of tweaking but is now sounding VERY very sweet. Going from fender clean & twang w/ vol on 1-3 and then quickly moving into super smooth crunch and high gain from there - all controllable from the guitar volume control.

2006-2007. Previous custom amp projects include: 1)a couple Marshall style 18 watters with custom higher gain front-ends, 2) an EF86-based 18watter, 3) a Matchless Lightning (based on a Vox AC15 - update: completely redesigned into a custom model I call 'Cubby Strat' which makes a Strat sound fatter than my big fat ASS! ;) and 4) a scarely-sweet sounding AC30/4 based on the EF86 normal channel of 1960 AC30. Ok, now back to working on new DVDs but still a few more amps to build! :)

& remember...

good vintage style lead tone is FAAAAT....DON'TSUCK OUT YOUR MIDZ KIDZ! (unless you play metal, then suck away!:)
